Dear Rachael

Thank you for the lovely fruit basket. My family and I arrived home very late last night to an empty refrigerator, with a jet-lagged, restive and hungry child agitating for food -- only  to find a festive and delicious assortment of fruit (from the very pricey Agata and Valentina no less).

My daughter quickly tore into the grapes, saving me from the humiliating business of doing an impromptu "Dancy Dance" from Yo Gabba Gabba (a strategy that has been known to work in situations of similar extremis). I thank you for your kindness to someone who has shown you no good reason for such a thing, your good humor -- and for appreciating the New York Dolls.

I will honor the sentiments of your note and promise to see to it that no puppies are hurt, killed or otherwise inconvenienced during my remaining time on television. Given my frequent trips to countries where the line between "pets" and "food" can become somewhat ...confusing, this is easier said than done -- and might well lead to some socially awkward moments. But one good turn, I think, deserves another.

Best,

Anthony Bourdain

Nice gesture! Anthony you must have been returning from SF, thought I saw you coming out of swan oyster depot. Next time you're in town, there is a Chinese place near Russian hill that would be right up your alley. The chef speaks no English, there are no menus, one seating in a very small place, he just cooks multi course meals from whatever he buys that day. You order by how much you are willing to spend. This is one of those Chinese secret places (the wife is Chinese) but he has been compared to Keller. Except there are Xmas lights all over the place. If your interested hit me back, I need to get the name from my wife. Great show! Plus I worked at one park for seven years so know your place well...cheers jjw

WOW. Not at all as condescending as I'd have thought you to be Anthony! Very well written. NOW...when are we going to Costa Rica? They don't "do" domestic animals there, Anthony.

Well done, sir. Maybe Rachael can join you on one of your future tours, much like Andrew Zimmern has... although since she's property of the Food Network, maybe that's not possible.

Justin - you are thinking of Jai Yun -- http://www.yelp.com/biz/jai-yun-san-francisco-2 I went when they were in their previous smaller location, and it definitely a unique and tasty experience.

Anthony - I would second the suggestion of Jai Yun for any future SF visits.

Tony, love the show and I'm reading Kitchen Confidential for the 3rd time! What do you think of Marco Pierre White's new show on NBC? I was floored to find it while channel surfing. From watching your interview with him during the UK show I figured he'd gone "into the wild" for good with that country inn/restaurant he was running (and the enviable opportunity to hunt his main course every day). What do you think brought him to NYC, and TV?

First, FANTASTIC show (though I wish you would be just a little kinder to vegetarians!). I'm not vegetarian myself, but I guess growing up with mostly South Indian food (and Indian food in general) I know that vegetarianism doesn't necessarily translate to bland and boring.

Second, your response to Rachel was so sweet, especially in the context of previous remarks about her. Highly commendable.

Third, you absolutely must make a trip to south India, if you haven't already. Totally different culinary landscape worth checking out.

Hi Anthony, I love your show. I just have a question. What's up with the island chef's dirty fingernails and hands in theVancouver episode? When there were close ups of him plating the food dishes, his fingers looked like he had been working at Jiffy Lube all day before cooking your food. Very gross that he doesn't wash his hands very often. Maybe you should send Andrew Zimmer to eat in his restaurant, since he likes to eat in gross places! So far, I liked your Puerto Rico show the best...keep up the good work!

As a wounded Vietnam vet, who risked his life for a noble purpose, I was extremely offended at your misguided comments during your latest trip there. Most of us who fought there did so with dignity and honor. Thousands of us died in a far away land trying to help the Vietnamese people escape Communism. And, unless you think Communism is a good thing, you, who never risked life and limb for others, owe Viet Nam vets (not the Vietnamese people) an apology. Our family used to love your show, but we'll never watch again.

    Dear Travel Channel,

I believe Anthony Bourdain has died and somebody has hijacked his blog. Somebody is trying to sully the name of Bourdain by making it look like he now likes Rachel Ray. Please send the police to his house to search for his body and set this all right. I will miss you Anthony. I always loved your show. I was hoping to get you to take me to France too. Oh well.

Aw shucks, that was so sweet I think I vomited a little in my mouth. Delish fruit aside, I hope you won't ever compromise your integrity by attempting to "clean up" other cultures whose social mores differ from our Western attitudes about food and animals. I may not choose to eat the family cat, but I'm sure there is someone in this world that would find my sleek feline a mighty tasty treat.

By the way, you showed your true colors when you were on the game farm in Ghana and were obviously thrilled that a good shot could not be had that day. Ya big lug. *grin*

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that has to do ridiculous things to convince a toddler that sitting down and eating is fun fun fun! The Cool Niece (two in mid-April) now required that a bite of food must be preceded by the flinging of a plastic lizard up to the ceiling. These are designed to stick and then fall off after a minute or so.... I still maintain that kids are little aliens sent to test us.

Glad that you and RR could bury the hatchet. Please don't ever change though. You gots to eat what you gots to eat. That's why it's called, "NO Reservations" and not "SOME Reservations".... Don't you find that parenthood changes things that way?

Well, this is the lowest point. What has happened to you? And all the people here commenting on how they love your nice gesture? Just the other day when I was watching older episodes of No Reservations, I noticed how much more edgy you were, in the kind of activities you were willing to participate as well as the commentary/observations. You have criticized (and well deserved) some of the “celebrity chefs” but the last 2 years I’ve seen you squirm, making up with one after the other, taking back things you said about them. Now Rachel Ray sends you a fruit basket and you kiss her behind too? You have officially entered the snobby club of celebrity chefs. I guess this is what happens when you get famous and start believing your own hype, the narcissism takes over. May I make the suggestion to feature as a guest chef on Rachel Ray’s show, cook up a 30 minute meal while debating which New York Dolls song you like best? I’m sure you’ll be able to find one to agree on. No more reservations for me, it has entered the established (read: mindless) TV fare. Oops, gotta go, Sandra Lee is making Semi-home made cupcakes!

Just making sure I understand where all of this has left us: killing puppies is bad, but slaying and eating cats is ok, depending on your zip code; most people still think RR is as relevant to cooking as the sham wow guy is to, uh, the good stuff the Germans always make; and that we all, sincere appreciation for fast fruit aside, much prefer Anthony to be bitter and sarcastic. Ok then, I'm with you! (but seriously, there are worse things than eating puppies! Don't be haters!)

So Tony graciously accepts RR's fruit basket, one that apparently was quite useful upon receipt. Why should that be upsetting to Tony's fans like us? Indeed, had he rejected RR's gift outright I'd be, oddly enough, less inclined to support him. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I have real problems with anyone who takes differences in opinion personally.

We've been too immersed in the Age of Coulter and Limbaugh to remember that, yes, people can disagree on major philosophical points and still be civil to each other. Are we all forgetting how Tony and Emeril buried the hatchet on the New Orleans episode?

There's a time for snark and a time for grace. I'm glad Tony's able to discern the difference.

I feel like I'm watching a gastronomic version of the Michael Corleone character in the "Godfather' who quoted his father's line "Keep your friends closer, but your enemies closer," as he moved toward respectability.

But you're still a hell of a good writer, TV persona, and food critic, regardless of what changes fatherhood brings your way. So what if 'Daddyhood" makes you a kindler, gentler person, so much the better for your daughter.

Just don't let 'Vic' die a respectable death...he's a persona that rings genuine in others' lives (including myself).

AAAArgh they know where you live!
So the escape to Vietnam plans have been moved forward huh?
Anyway fun as that topic is we should probably move on.
I'm sitting here drinking and poking a keyboard. It's been a month since I did this, so it's not a habit. Yes, I checked. I imagine I'd be less paranoid if I relaxed more. Although I saw the beach today, it was still there(lucky). It's been pissin down here, luckily it cleared today another 24 hours of rain and we'd be flooded in. We're in one of the highest rainfall regions of NSW, and naturally they built the nearby town on a floodplain. It's not a problem for us on our hill though. Too wet for mushrooms, although we found some brown puffballs under the pecan mulch, I've been hoping that they're truffles, but there's no recorded native species, even though Oz mycology is still in it's infancy. At the very least though it proves that the conditions are right.
    Cool eh?

I've been sitting here pondering this, and I just don't know what to make of it. I mean, Tony did post the "thank you" here on his blog, but why? To read our reactions? To use it as a confessional? To keep us from barfing into our oatmeal while reading it in "Page Six" of the NYPost? To give us a complete mindf'ck? This is either brilliant or a sign of impending doom. If the next one is signed, "xo,xo, Tony" I am SO outta here! My guess: the seemingly kind gesture by Rachel Ray will not be misconstrued by anyone; Tony thanked her and life will go on...as will the snark. I don't think he has put her on top of his speed dial list.

Dude, you're getting soft on us. Yes, she's killing you with kindness, but I never thought you'd fall for it! I was much happier not knowing that RR likes the NY Dolls because yes, that brings a glimmer of hope into an otherwise sea of blech. But I don't care how cool her friends are, or how well-versed in music she may be. Whenever I see that face and those puppet-like movements and hear that scratchy, high-pitched voice on my television, I literally lunge at the remote so that I can be rid of "it" as soon as possible. There's just no excuse for that kind of behavior, man. Worse still is that RR would probably recommend taking the beautiful fruit from the fruit basket and sticking it into a baking pan and covering it with peanut butter and marshmallows and fudge dipping sauce for some hideous 30-minute dessert. She has a dog food line called DELISH. Please, Tony, stop the madness and keep these types of positive reinforcements out of existence.

I'm not gonna tear into ya over the Rachel Ray spiel, I am not a judge or jury, but I do appreciate the fact she sent ya that basket. Good people do good things, that sure seems like a good thing to do.

Hey eyesawfoto - I've already planted the idea that Tony do a show in Pittsburgh (when I met him last year at the Carnegie for his lecture.) I suspect it may be a while though since he has already done the cities around us - Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo. I agree though; we have lots of great ethnic food and cool things to see (especially the Strip District).

Unfortunately, she probably thinks it is just some cute tune about making out with her man. Cheers, artnlit aka Bonnie (your t-shirt connection!)

I think the whole fruit basket post is a touche at being outdone. One you have to grin at, if nothing else. Kudos to you both.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in Knoxville this coming weekend (yes, Knoxville, TN). I couldn't afford the $140 VIP tickets for the meet and greet afterwards, but that's ok. I think it'll be a good time all the same.

Hey Anthony or whomever reads Anthony's blogs, emails and other crap that he probably doesn't want to read. I just want to say that beneath the New York stare and humorful sarcasm that you and your team make a damn good show. Your goodness comes out to anyone open to see it, then again I'd never want anyone to feel that a New Yorker has lost his edge. I dare say "hey come visit me in whatever-place-I-call home", but the Truth is that I have no idea what would be a good place for you to go,you're the expert not me, just keep making good shows. Thanks.

I am so confused. So was there a fruit basket or was there not a fruit basket?

Assuming the fruit basket exists and is not an advance April Fool's joke as some have suggested I am with those who thought it was a nice gesture on both sides in giving and accepting the gift graciously. That's the grown up thing to do and it doesn't signify a loss of edge.

But I am too clamoring for a longer post: about food, travel, music for the road, reflections on life--something along those lines...

There's a fundamental decency to you, Tony. If it weren't there, you wouldn't have the following you have -- because without it nobody would care about you.

"Kitchen Confidential" was born out of outrage against your decency. Ditto your defense of Mary Mallon. Ditto your evident connection with cooks around the world, from the humblest to the most celebrated.

You don't know me. But because you're a writer, and a pretty good one, I know you. I know a decent guy.

Oh, Tony, Tony, Tony...I applaud your dedication to bringing world cuisine to the table of we jaded burger guzzling Americans, I am compelled to invite you to come to Vermont, where we hearty, quirky natives (myself an 8th generation Vermonter, and as proud of this as any Mayflower or DAR matrons could be)can show you what REAL people here consume. We have game suppers where native game such as moose, beaver, muskrat, woodchuck, racoon, venison and elk are served in such a diverse manner as to make you swoon. We have a notoriously delicious BBQ maestro who delivers out of an old school bus. We have the Vermont Chew Chew Fest on the waterfront in Burlington which gives any foodie multiple orgasms tasting the wares of dozens if not hundred of Vermont restaurants and food producers. We have weird and wild goat farmers who make some of the best cheese in the world. We have the Morses in Montpelier whose thick Vermontah accent is exceeded only by their virtuosity as maple producers and raconteurs of stories that cover generations of Morses. The list could go on and on ad nauseum. Come see us. I guarantee you will be delighted. I have all the time in the world to provide further information. And besides, my sister and myself would LOVE to host you and your family and crew on a true Vermont Safari. Come see the real Vermont, Tony. We DARE you.
    Your devoted viewer,

Albania. Nobody seems to ever talk of this quiet little country, and even though it's neighboring country gave heavy influence on feta cheese and philo, that's not all this country has to offer....I wish I could find a better way to send my comment than here as there's probably no guarantee you'll actually see this, but really, you ought to think about going there for a show! There is a rich culture, extensive history, and oh by the way it's home to a few well-knowns....the Belushi Brothers, Mother Teresa, Regis Philbin, and Albanias own war hero, Skanderbeg....their language is amongst the oldest in the world, and the people are VERY hospitable. PLEASE I HOPE SOMEONE READS THIS COMMENT!!!! And IF you need someone to show you around, ahem, my Albanian boyfriend would be very happy to oblige :) Take care Tony, and ty if you read this! P.S. Now you have done it. You made nice with the girl so you will need to do an appearance on her show. She will cook you some pork dish that will be crossed eyed good and you will have to admit that you like, it will be Chicago deep pan pizza all over again. Then she will need to travel with you to another continent so she can experience your show as well. You will probably get off the boat or plane or whatever and a large group of the local folks (whom speak absolutely no English) will be standing around pointing and gleefully shouting "Rachel Ray, Rachel Ray", they will elbow you out of the way and they will hand you their cameras to ask you to take a picture of them with her. I guess it is ok to admit now that I actually like both of your shows. You should come to Northwest Arkansas sometime, we eat all kinda critters here, and we have grown up food too. Your show is one of the best on television, keep traveling.

I recall having first heard of you a couple years back. My writer grandmother came across your book, and she made jokes to us that some smartass managed to allude our family tree somehow. Later, a local cook friend of mine actually got to meet you at the local Ann Arbor Borders, as well as at the restaurant he worked at then. He's still astounded at how quickly you handed him his ass on a platter, with a smile and a smoke and a few great insights into life and cooking. Recently, I started watching your show (yay reruns and being a student again). I can't help but be jealous the entire hour of just how lucky you are to travel and experience the world the way you do. Well, I have this stroke of genius when I'm not laughing hysterically. Keep up the good work, and I'll keep watching.

Something about the entire exchange just rubs me the wrong way. Of course, if someone makes a gesture of sending a gift it will be acknowledged in a thank you note. But the bigger question is: why did she send anything and why was the note blogged instead of sent privately? One has no choice but to question the sincerity of both the gift and the acknowledgment. Sure RR has stated publicly that criticism doesn't bother her, the critics are correct about her skills and knowledge and you can't please everyone. But I think it is very very important to her to appear to be Little Miss Sunshine and that's why she has employees who post that her detractors are mentally ill.

Tony I think you're great, love your writing and your attitude. But I think this whole thing is simply one big publicity stunt.

I saw the Beirut episode recently. Decided that it needed to be submitted to an EMMY's panel. After quick rsch, I learned that it was nominated for an EMMY in 2007. I am pleased to see that as a "panel" member, quality and distinction in tv production is consistently evident and easily discernable from the gang of 30second tolerant productions. Keep up the great work.

    Hi Anthony!.
In less than three weeks my wife and I will do our first trip to US and we did choose NY like destination.
Generally when we arrive to another country we talk with locals and ask them about how they do day to day, what they eat day to day because a lot of time food talks you about the people and they roots like society, it talk about where they comes from and what they are.
So, what best New Yorker for ask about food than you!. I will appreciate if you can give us some ideas of what a typical New Yorker eats (and where) in a day for breakfast, lunch, diner, etc. How can we feel “new Yorkers†from a meal?.
About me I can tell you that I live in Venezuela from the last twelve years but I`m Uruguayan and what an emotional surprise was know that you was in my country, it was very emotive for me because I follow your program religiously and I enjoy it a lot. Unfortunately in LA we are watching past season, so I had to get that episode from Internet.
Well Anthony, I really hope that you read this comment and that you can guide us for this gastronomical adventure in New York.
By the way, there is a place in NY where you can eat “chivitosâ€, search for “El chivito d’oro†in Internet. One of our meals in NY well be there!.

I don't think Tony is getting softer, I think peoples expectations are getting greater. There doesn't have to be conformity, it's just that saying "F" it when another is taking an effort makes things easier when all the crap is just getting old. That S**t gets old, and if I were Rachael, I'd be a fan of Tony's too, and the fruit basket was a reference to Tony's prior blog, saying she's paying attention and isn't seriously hating anyone. I personally despise Rachael Ray, she's the epitome of what's wrong with American culture today, all that fake B.S. and all. A perfect snapshot of the destruction of the genuine American woman. I'm sure Tony knows that, or at least may feel a little like this, but this caring just gets old after a while, and why not just concentrate on what he's passionate about.

If Tony is getting softer, well... people gotta change.

Tony, it's nice to you see you can go back and forth between snarky and civilized. I'm no RR fan, but at the very least, she comes off as a genuinely nice lady and someone who hasn't become full of herself despite her (undeserved) celebrityhood. As far as the Dolls go, who knows, maybe RR is a closeted hardcore rock chick dying to burst out of her perky cute exterior.

Now, if she's sincere, let's see her dine on uni, foie gras, and barbecued iguana.

Aloha from Hawaii.I really enjoy your show. I love to see you experience other cultures through their food as I do. I was a little disappointed in the Hawaii trip you took last year though. You started out dissing the commercial side of Hawaii which got me really excited thinking you were going to finally blow the lid off of the fake Hawaiian vacation so many people from the continental U.S. take and show them all how they totally missed an entire culture while they were here sipping their Mai Tai’s and dressing like twins. Then you end up going to see the hermit on the big island who is not a native, The radio host guys in Oahu who were local but not really native, and still going to the Big Holly Wood Luau oh man what a sell out. I saw your show on New Zealand and thought it was very balanced you showed both the indigenous side and the more recent commercial side of it. Where was the balance when you came here? If you ever come over to do another Hawaii show Send me an email or something and I can give our production people some good references to cultural practitioners and find you some good traditional Hawaiian food. I hate to say it but that Andrew Zimmer guy went much more native then you. We just can't have that.

Hey Anthony! The one on a Bacon Binge!

You need to do a Southeast show. I'm 12 and live in Alpharetta, GA, and even I know that places like Charleston and Atlanta are havens for creative foodies looking for some publicity and a world renowned chef to give them some constructive criticism. You've done shows on Washington D.C., Manhattan, and Chicago why not Atlanta, home of Coke, the world's busiest airport, delta's hub, the world's biggest drive-in, and the world's largest aquarium.

    Hello Anthony,

I know you probably get thousands of insane, annoying, and down right idiotic questions and comments every day of your life but I felt I wanted to express something to you.

Your shows give me allot these days, I travel the world through your show, I learn about new foods, cultures and people every time I watch, I see and learn things I never knew or was blinded by the media with.

Thank you for opening my eyes to these beautiful countries you visit.

I have always been a picky eater, the thing you hate most right? well I have become more open minded about my eating, I'm trying things more often everywhere I go, and I kick myself every time when I try something delicious that I should have been eating for years now.

My main reason though for this message as you already know it is unrelated to your actual blog, is to thank you even more for opening the eyes of myself, my family and I hope many people to the cases of some of these people and their countries, I watched your Laos episode for the first time and to see what these people go through it broke my heart.

I appreciate what I have these days because of episodes like this, I appreciate life for all that it is because of this.

I just hope it does the same for everyone else.

Thank you Anthony Bourdain, you are an amazing inspiration in my life.

Watched a repeat of your trip to Hawai'i and was saddened. The first part was a total loss. If you were going to touch on Aloha Shirts you should have gone to Reyn Spooners. They are the real, tradtional classic Aloha Shirt people. You got taken to a tourist place. The people you talked to were not Kamaaina. The hot dog thing ... puka hot dog??? You mean you ate hot dogs with holes? Again you were taken to a tourist place. But you made up for it when you went 'local' with lau lau, poi and more. Then kudos for Side Street Inn. And you were winnahs with Spam. Good job! Also, very good job with going local in Kalihi. I am not sure why you put the surfing stuff in.... Seems like you weren't either. The time would have been better spent in the morning fish market, in Oahu Market or even in Tamashiro's. I don't know who gave you advice on Hawai'i. but it was not your best effort.

We love your show! How do we get your job? We both are seasoned (I mean 50+) airline crew. I would like to see a show about flying to destinations including the ins and outs. The trials and tribulations,or to simplify, the pain in the ass of commercial airline travel would be our goal. We love your creative and very real approach to travel including cocktails and smoking. We end every day in hopes of a cocktail, a smoke and good conversation wherever our bed is for that night. We have had many late night discussions about the content of the travel channel wondering why some of the shows. We don't want to see fat men eating obsessivly or the blonde bimbo on the beach (obviously for ratings for the male population) when we turn on the travel channel. Keep drinking, smoking, swearing and keeping up the only show real on the network!!!

    Hi Anthony,

Not sure how to go about telling you my thoughts today, after watching your most recent Vietnam episode of No Reservations, however I figure placing a comment in your most recent blog entry is a good start.

Up until today I've enjoyed your show as one enjoys any international travel/food show - with curiosity and a gentle smile as you recognise a similar feeling or experience. However, the way you created your Vietnam episode lifted my opinion of you personally up to a level transcending TV host. In fact, I'd now love to sit down with you on a Saigon street corner and share thoughts over a beer and the local sights.

Last year I made two short trips to Vietnam. One north, and the other south. You articulated my feelings about that country so perfectly, and you echo my own thoughts about how to live there. In fact, I am about to arrive in Saigon in early June to start teaching IT and English for 12 months. I'm leaving a house and partner, as well as an established and a very comfortable lifestyle, at home in exchange for the exotica that is Vietnam.
There's not much more I can say other than if I had the resources, ability and audience to create my own show similar to yours, that episode is exactly what I would have tried to create. It's an awesome feeling when you see a celebrity successfully translate your own feelings to screen. I've been trying to let people know why I am going, but I think your show may be the best way to do that now.

All the best, and if you come back again during my time in Saigon, I sincerely hope I get the chance to share that beer and some wonderful food with you.

    travel turkey - May 13 2009 @ 4:11 am

It's friendly, beautiful, culturally rich and good value for money. It's modern enough to be comfortable yet traditional enough to be interesting.
Turkey is one of the world's top 10 travel destinations, welcoming more than 23 million visitors every year.
Culture & Art: Turkey's history of human habitation goes back 25,000 years. Some of the earliest-known human communities are here. Hittites, Phrygians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Seljuks, Mongols, Ottomans and others have all left their works of art and culture in what is now the Turkish homeland. Modern Turkey has all this—and more mobile phones than you've ever seen in one place before.
Special-Interest Activities: With nearly 8400 km (5200 mi) of coastline, water sports and yachting are big favorites. Hiking, white-water rafting, mountain-climbing and bicycling are all important, and growing, as is skiing. My favorite of all is hot-air ballooning.
Cuisine: Turkish food is now world-famous, and rightly so. The abundance of its fields, farms, orchards, flocks and fishing boats is exceptional, and Turkish chefs take full advantage of this bounty. Everyone comments on how good the food is. Not only that, the moderately-priced gourmet dinner (plus wine) is still easy to do. Then there's Turkish tea....
Good Times: Sit at a long table in a meyhane (taverna) in Istanbul, Kusadasi, Bodrum, Antalya, order a glass of beer, wine or pungent raki and join in the songs and stories. Turks revel in good food, good friends, good times, and good nightlife.
For stories of life and travel in Turkey, read the excerpts from my travel memoir Bright Sun, Strong Tea.

Nice job at the CT Forum. You got in your trademark stories and I loved your planned McDonald's negative reinforcement training for your 2 year old. The big surprise for me was Duff. Never saw his show. He was very entertaining. You probably didn't notice, but there was a locally famous cupcake truck out front selling cupcakes. Don't let Alice off the hook on her all organic kick. The kids in the Hartford school system prove your point. They come from poor, minority, single head of household families. 33% drop out rate. Bullets flying in the north end. Do you think they give a $%&#@ if the Hood milk they get for lunch is organic? Do you think the school budget can be doubled or tripled to go organic. in a perfect world, her point is valid. As you pointed out, there are larger concerns for these kids. Alice is her own world out there where her chefs get paid for 12 months and only work 6. I'm guessing she didn't grow up poor, or if she did, she has long forgotten. Despite your 7 digit bank account and fame, you still know what day to day living for the majority on the planet is like. Keep your chef/author/traveller gig going!!! And please tell me you have been kicking around some ideas for a future Bobby Gold.

    Hi Tony:

This is probably ancient history now, but we just saw your episode on Los Angeles and were so disappointed!

As Angelenos, we also love New York and thought your treatment of your home town was wonderful. (We can't wait to go to Prune!)

Like NY, L.A. is a town that offers the opportunity to travel the world without ever leaving central Los Angeles.

What about wonderful central "foodie" areas like amazing:
    Koreatown
    Little Ethiopia
    Little Tokyo East
    Japantown West
Mashti Malone's Persian ice cream shops
    Little Armenia
    Nigerian restaurants of Inglewood

... and much more? (We were grateful you did include Thai Town; did you know there's also a Thai Elvis and a Thai Bob Dylan that plays in that same Plaza?)

Please come back, skip the inexplicable montages of oil dereks, shooting ranges and interviews with gang members in a city an hour north of L.A., and spend some time in the amazing multicultural districts right in central L.A.

We have many weird, wonderful, delicious areas that need your attention!!

    Much love,
    Pablo

I don't know how often you've been to Portland, but I wanted to make a couple food suggestions (I'm sure you get these all the time, so I'll be short, check them out if you want or if you have time). Going to school here for the last 2.5 years I've gotten a good taste of Portland, and these are enjoyable places for sure.

-Pok Pok (amazing northern thai drinking food, my favorite place in Portland)
-Beast (One of Portland's more interesting dining experiences with a set menu and a very creative chef really doing food the way she wants to do it).
-The 24 hour Pancake and Steak House (Greasy, sketchy, and amazingly satisfying)
-Also, I've never been, but Le Pidgeon is supposed to be amazing.
-Any of the food carts downtown are tops too.
    Enjoy,

    Anthony,
Thank you very much for a great show tonight at the Flint Center in Cupertino! I now have two great memories of you: 1) Autographing a tattoo on the thigh of "stalker-guy"; 2) Being SO incredibly gracious with both the audience and with us lucky few that got to meet you after the show!

It's nice to know you are as much a gentleman with us as you are at someone's house on "No Reservations!"

Tony, your show at the FLint Center was hilarious! I missed you by minutes when you had a drink at the bar before your show. Your presence was evident from the half-filled glass of beer you left behind. Thank you for praising Vietnam so much. It was clear how much you love the country. I hope i have the opportunity to run into you when you journey back there for one year. please if you ever return to the bay area, venture into San Jose's Little Saigon. You would not be disappointed for the best pho noodle house and beef noodle! I would love to take you and your crew there.

Hey Tony, I am a great admirer of your show and anticipate your new seasons. I just have to first, invite your to my home country of TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO. I think you can explore the more exotic side. Andrew(bizarre foods) went and did it justice, but I think you can find more exotic things that we eat there. Please try to include that country into one of your upcoming seasons.

    Dear Anthony,
My husband and I are big fans of your show and want to share a very special group of kids and one incredible mother with you. The reason for sharing this story is it captures the essence of your feelings about food, that it is a time of community and togetherness. My mom is about to celebrate her 60th birthday in two weeks and as part of celebrating her life and aging they did a story on her volunteer work with some amazing kids. Please check out this link and listen to the tale of how food has helped save these kids. Here is the link, you click on the picture of the woman with the white hair and the blue shirt under the caption "Coming of Age" (top left picture), her name is Donna Miller and here is here story.

Dear Tony: I am a guy from the Northwest of Mexico, and i want to thank you for all the excelent programs you all present.Since i saw your program 2 months ago,my afternoons are so delightfull and magic.

I have enjoyed everyone of each program, specially the program you were in Paris, when you told about the story of Les Halles, the making of baguettes and you saw the sunshine of a new day drinking a smooth cup of coffee while we heard a beautiful french melodie from an accordion.WoW! I was floating with that magic.

I like your chronicles in each program, and please keep being a good human being. Also liked a lot the program from Laos, when you were invited to eat with the native man without one arm and leg,it broke my heart and i think the same as you did.

I hope someday you come here,at northwest mexico--my city is called Guasave, and the State is Sinaloa....to enjoy with us the magic flavors of Mèxico. It will be an honor to have you.

    Thank you for everything

    Sorry about my poor english

    Dear Anthony Bourdain,

Thank you for creating a show that the everyday American can relate to. I have traveled all of American & spent my junior year of college in Switzerland. After watching your shows I always want to experience your journey. Maybe not all 100% as I would be traveling with my girl.
However, I am recommending you set up a travel service with Travel Channel where viewers/whoever can go on the same journey with the same guides you use visiting similar or same destinations. How AWESOME would it be for your tours to be destinations!!! I'm in my name and contact information is in the "Leave a Comment" section of this posting. I would greatly appreciate a response as your travels have inspired me in my work/professional travels.

    Tony,

Do something different! Get your sorry okole out to Fargo, ND and meat er meet up with Prof Tom Isern at North Dakota and learn about food on the great plains. Tom is an incredible guy and a true Plainsfolk rennaissance (however you spell that) man.

Don't wear your fancy New York shoes and be prepared to step in some domestic buffalo dung. Who knows you may even learn about leafy spurge and if your lucky Tom might even be able to get you to a church supper. If you are doubly lucky you might even get to meet Chuck Suchy or go to a barn dance. This is the real Great Plains, not the pap Garrison Keilor dishes out.

If you ever want to come back to Tokyo, Japan, I'll be your personal tour guide. Just look for the midget, Mexican, momma making a ruckus. Maybe someday we could make a ruckus together? Wait, that sounds dirty, and I don't mean to sound dirty, that is, unless you want me to. Okay. Sorry. I mean, if you want to come back to Japan and see it from my perspective (an American living overseas), I'll take you to the best Karaoke bars with the best sake in town.

As a brazilian living in Miami Beach it was so nice to see a brazilian flag in your office among other world souvenirs. I remember when you had feijoada and caipirinha in Brazil. You are down to earth, don't have that celebrity way to talk to people. You are just yourself and that's what make people like you. Renata Guitart - July 12 2009 @ 5:19 pm

Hi, Tony. Just wondering, now that Obama open a bit the travel restrictions between Cuba and the USA, and even the NYPhil is planning to play in Havana, are you considering going to Cuba also? What is not to like from Cuba? You will be the first to go, there is pork in all variations, the barrio chino in Havana, the caldosa in Tunas, and in Santiago de Cuba my former city), the congri con chicharrones, the fufu, the pork made in the chinese box, and in case you need mistery, the quest to find the pru, a beverage made of fermented root vegetables and spice that claims to lower your blood pressure in minutes. All that without mentioning all the music culture and the innate friendly quality of the cuban-by-foot. If you ignore the government and don't talk about politics, you could have the best of the times in a country full of beautiful landscapes and better people. What do you say?

  262. 262
    Renata Guitart - July 12 2009 @ 5:55 pm

Let me lure you into Cuba a little bit more... I am not going to say the nature in the keys, because as a cuban I wasn't allowed to go, it was turist's land, some people say it is paradise in earth, but consider Rum, booze, beers, beaches and the best cigars (did you really quit smoking?)... and my favorite place, La Gran Piedra, a completely different ecosystem from the whole island, but really, the cubans, they are just friendly and laughing about everything, even about the drama they are living in, some of them even think there is nothing wrong with the government at all, so delusion is another charm...
I love your show, keep them coming, Renata

  263. 263
    Anne - July 12 2009 @ 8:31 pm

    Tony-
Just got back from Cuba. It was a very surreal. I would describe it as very "authentic". The old Chevys and crumbling buildings are very much a fact of the most sober reality of everyday life, not the least bit Disneyfied or staged for tourists, as is so often the case any other historical city.
Besides myself, I only ran into a few Americans (not the Ugly kind, thankfully, they prefer Cancun) and it's probably the only time I've ever felt that being American was a huge disadvantage.
When I was in college, my Art History professor said that the Impressionists painted their works in a quick and haphazard way so as to make their work feel as if society was transforming into modernity to fast, that they were trying to capture the moment before it it was gone. I think that's exactly where Cuba is right now. It won't be long before it's no longer a place "frozen in time", and soon there will be Wal-Marts and McDonalds on every corner. I'm glad I got a quick, fleeting look at what is on the verge of enormous change, even if what I'm looking at is a romantic, tragic cage that people have been forced into for the last 50 years.
I feel conflicted; I want you to go so you can paint that Impressionist masterpiece before it's gone, but at the same time I'm afraid that by you going, you'll put it on the radar of the type of Americans that go to Cancun, and you know what that means.
The food is amazing, the people are unbelievable, the story of Cuba is so compelling, romantic, tragic....it almost begs to be covered. Go before the story is over.

Love your show. Love you. Keep making art.

    Saludos,
    Anne Vieyra

I enjoyed your return to Vietnam yesterday. I am in Somerset, Ky and in a wheel chair. I would love to see your reaction to a new city in Kentucky and the unusual plants we have. Everyone mentions Louisville. No one mentions Somerset. The local plants are spectacular. I'm sure you could hunt out the foods. I can personally attest to the quality of a few local restaurants - Mexican, the Ky Colonel, and a Cracker barrel. Most of my experience is with bookstores and online. Let's face it. I'd be happy with an autographed picture or book of yours. I'm looking hopefully toward celebrating my 50th anniversary on March 2010.

This is one of those Chinese secret places (the wife is Chinese) but he has been compared to Keller.

Loved your remark on "St. Alice" Waters. My mother-in-law knew her personally. Frankly.....lotta hot air. So you grow your own stuff for the restaraunt (limited in size)....restaraunts here in Columbus, ohio do too. However, we cannot do so yearround, as not quite as fortunate to have the $$$$$$$$ to abide and operate where ya live and do business. So Saint Alice...go get her Tony!

As a testament to the loyalty of Tool fans, when the band released 2006’s 10,000 Days after a five-year gap between the previous album, Lateralus, the record immediately shot to Number One and eventually went Platinum. Tool are the rare band that can go up the mountain, disappear for years and return—with 10 (or so) commanding tracks—to an even stronger reception.

The reason I like Metallica is because they’re very complex, mature men who at the same time have the enthusiasm of little kids. There’s nothing better than meeting your heroes and finding that they’re real, down-to-earth people. You can go out and have a beer with them and talk about something besides, ‘Oh, you’re great. I love your band. I love that song.’ You can forget all that and just have a really inspiring conversation.
