I Told You I Smelled Emmy!

By Anthony Bourdain on September 14, 2009 9:49 AM | Permalink | 201 Comments

Saturday night at the 61st Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, my long suffering friends and colleagues Todd Liebler and Zach Zamboni-who, for the last few years have sacrificed anything resembling normal lives to follow me around the world pointing cameras in my general direction-scored a major upset victory by bringing home the award for cinematography in the non-fiction category. Todd, who has garnered a not entirely undeserved worldwide reputation for stumbling into things, bounded up to that stage with astounding speed and grace-suddenly, a veritable Nijinsky, sure footedly making what was easily one of the smoothest, nicest, most coherent and entertaining acceptance speeches of the night. Zach, who hardly got a word in, managed to look very dashing in his tuxedo. The two of them spent the rest of the evening basking happily in the admiring praise of other directors of photography, camera operators and cinematographers, few of whom have likely had to make do with a bag of risotto on a skateboard as a camera platform. It was the greatest thing I've seen in a very long time and I am over the moon with happiness for them. Of the three Emmys we were nominated for-this was the one I wanted to win badly. All you have to do is compare the looks of season one-with those of recent seasons to see how hard these guys work, how monstrously talented they are-and how much they've been able to do with so very little.

Congratulations, my friends-with whom I've spent far more time over the years than with my family. And thank you.

Speaking of family, this Monday's show probably represents the most perverse angle we could have taken for a season ender.

After five full years of making NO RESERVATIONS and trying, always, to do something different from whatever seemed to work (or didn't work) the week before, I think we found an entirely new way to undermine any comfortable assumptions about what we do. Known for snark? Let's do the exact opposite. The sickest, most transgressive, borderline suicidal move we could make this week? A warm, huggy family drama-with cute kid! Hell-there's even a bunny (Okay....we ate its family-but still...)!

It's the last show of the season-before getting back on the pony for a decidedly harsher, higher impact, more foreign location centered Season Six. Looking down the road at ten months of balls-out craziness, where we're hoping to push things farther than we've ever done before, in places like the Congo, Beirut, Cuba, the Central Highlands of Viet Nam, Ecuador, the Caribbean, Panama, Istanbul, Southern India, I'm really happy with this more quiet, food and family oriented look at a beautiful place seldom seen on television. And, I have to say, I enjoyed indulging my once carefully hidden secret aspirations to be some kind of country Italian patriarch.

When I first laid eyes on Sardinia, about two years ago, I saw how amazing it was, how thoroughly different-looking than anywhere else I'd been, my first thought, (TV whore that I am) was "Damn! I gotta make a show here!"

By the time a week had passed and my father in-law's family had shown me around and plied me with a greatest hits of Sardinian food, I was ticking off a list of things I had to do again-only this time on-camera. I mentioned this, casually, in conversation-at which point-the entire family swung into action. I should have seen it coming-that there was never any question that of course they'd take charge. It was instantly a matter of family and national pride.

My show is shown in Italy. Friends and neighbors in Lombardy and Sardinia would see this thing I'd be working on. I would not be allowed to fuck it up! Unfortunately, for my wife, no one in the family speaks English (I communicate with my in-laws in my appallingly inept French). And as Aunt Andreana had already pretty much taken over as executive producer and the rest of the family had fanned out across Sardinia searching for scenes and checking locations, it was really only a matter of time until Ottavia was dragooned into service. I say "unfortunately" because she'd really and truly rather shove her head into a bag full of poisonous snakes than be on television-particularly on my show-a program of which she is a particularly harsh critic.

It was pointed out that as the family were already committed as enthusiastic participants it would look weird if she were not on the show and even weirder if a hired sidekick/fixer was seen showing me around the family compound and her Dad's hometown of Nuoro, or introducing me to specialties her family had introduced me to only the year previous. Frankly, I used every variety of emotional blackmail available to me. Her last line of defense was a suggestion that I hire a "stunt wife" for the episode. Someone out of central casting-the Italian version. Didn't happen. And she's been living in a state of near mortification since, dreading tonight. Augusto, Nelson, Dania and Eric will know what I'm talking about.

Those of you concerned that No Reservations has suddenly taken a turn towards the travel TV version of Paul McCartney and Wings can rest assured that we're already well into shooting season six and that it's chockfull of jungle bugs, burning cocaine, backwoods hooch, and dick jokes. Sadly, no warthog anus as yet. But there's always tomorrow.

Congratulations on the most vaunted Emmy. It is certainly well deserved.

I am eagerly looking forward to tonight's show with the wife and the in-laws. It should be great fun. Besides, I just adore Italian food.

Congrats on the Emmy. Your crew deserves it, especially this year. FWIW, in year one, the show was about you as a personality on vacation; now, five years later, the show is more about the place; you appear as part of the background. The cinematography has now eclipsed your delighfully eccentric and vibrant personality, which is a Good Thing (TM; apologies to Ms. Stewart). Some of the scenery, such as in Laos and Tokyo, is so beautiful it is painful to watch (again, a Good Thing).

Many congrats to you and the crew - just like you smelled it. Bet the producer still ain't happy, or at least until next week. Pitch the ideas now!

Which way to go now that you've reached the top??

    Congrats 0.0 team!

Very happy to see the rewards of your hardwork. Been watching the show since season 1, and yes you can see the difference. The angles, music, lighting, and even the broll have improved greatly. As much as Tony b**** about the lengthy days, rediculous "vic"-hating moments or crackpot tourguides he is faced to deal with, I am thankful that there are others behind the scenes making this show a success. I will continue watching as long as you continue shooting.

Also, if one were to ever come to Wisconsin, please be advised to ignore all other ideas for shows mentioned in the past. The Wisconsin I know is boarderline Canada-esque, filled with the best beer in America. Also, we have squeeky cheese...thats a good thing in case you are confused.

Hi Tony! Congratulations!! You and your show totaly diserve it! We from Brazil are steel wating for your to come back and redime your self from that drastic comment you made about Minas Gerais in the Sao paulo episode! We are so far way of been one of the poorest region in Brazil! That was your Paulista friend talking, not you.. not a traveller! Step out the tourist tour and come to see the real Brazil! Rio and Sao Paulo are turistic places, everybody heard of it! Come to Minas, and have the real deal!

Congrats on the well deserved Emmy nomination. Love your shows and books. However, your Outer Boroughs show was very disappointing to me, a Bronx bred woman. Couldn't you have spent more than 5 min out of an hour there? I grew up with great Italian, Jewish, American, German food plus the best meatball sandwich from a trailer in Throggs neck. You on the other hand were in the Bronx, but two minutes from Manhattan and didn't venture further into the brough. I knoe times have changed and there are different ethnic groups there now, but please, a little more effort could have been made for that episode. So you get from me, a big Bronx Cheer for that. I guess nostalgia ain't what it used to be!

Hi Tony! I didn´t know anything about you or your show. But I was pretty much forced to watch No Reservations because my girlfriend is a huge fan of you. I have to say: at the beginning, it was hard to “share” her with your show. But guess what: I began to like No Reservations, and I have to admit: Tony, you are not bad at all! Congratulations!

Cheers on the Emmy. It is well deserved. The last show of the season tonight, huh? Schade. I was so looking forward to this episode. Knowing this is the last for a while is a bit disappointing. Get those TC folks to conjure up some filler/best-of-shows to tide us over.

Many congrats to the team on the Emmy. I'm really looking forward to this evening's show, as I fell in love with Sardinian food (and music) on a trip there a couple years back. Particularly looking forward to your take on Su Gologone, which I thought was great.

Just watching the episode in Sardinia and takes me back home, not in Sardinia, but in Romania. I cannot believe that your trip in Romania was such a fiasco. You said you love the agroturism. There are some many in Romania where you eat home made food with home grown vegetables, poultry, pork, lamb, rabbit, etc. All organically grown and delicious cooked. Anyway, images of Sardinia, brought me back home in Romania - Transylvania region. Thank you!

    Tony,
My favorite is the show in China (those commies who have become great Capitalists in 20yrs.) where you go from the coast to the mountains. Your supporting staff and everyone definitely has their s--- together and in one sock too. Toast to you sir with my table wine. Hmm good.

Great show. We tuned in late and knew something was weird when you picked up the kid (Tony wouldn't do that!). The bunny shot pushed us over the edge and my wife and I hit the web trying to find out what the heck you were up to.

Had you gone insane? Was this some warped flashback caused by a rapid release of fat stored pharmaceuticals?

No, you were just being proud of your beautiful family.

    Looking forward to season six!

I just started watching Tony and I get a happy feeling everytime I see where he is going. Just watched the last show in Sardania and loved it. I hope your travels take you to Iceland if you have not been there. That is where my family is from and I have never been there and I probably wont make it there, so I would love to see it through Tony's eyes. You should have won all the emmy's.

Tony, your wife did a lovely job. Octavia was authentic, genuine and knowledgeable. i lived and worked in Tuscany ( on an agriturismo, at a cooking school) for to brief a time and she made me miss my time there. I wanted to visit Sardinia but it seemed to far a trip for my 30-35 hour weekends. I will make sure I do it next time I am in Italy. Ciao June

Having just watched the Sardinia episode, and news on the emmy, I can only say one thing. Mr Bourdain is the luckiest man alive. Not lucky on the Emmy, that was well earned by all who work on the show. But to be able to be part of such a team, to be able to travel like he does, and to have a wife with the family she does... Wow. All I ask sir, is will you pick my next lotto numbers? :-)

    Well done crew!!!

Your wife is a real firecracker - she seems like just the right person for you. So nice to finally see the family. I adore Italy but even based on the food alone, Sardinia does seem like a different country. Great show. Very interesting.

Congrats on the Emmy. My favorite shows ever were your Lebanon episode followed closely by the one filmed in Laos but for sheer postcard-perfect beauty: Venice, baby. That show was pure eye-candy.

All I can say is, Tony... you are one lucky son a bitch! Great family with great cultural backgrounds, rooted in an absolutely breathtaking country. Coming through hard and troubled times, fighting addictions that most normal people do face...and still making something great of yourself. You truly are an inspiration to me personally. I could only hope to do a fraction of the things that you have accomplished within the last ten years in my lifetime. I watch your show every week and everyday in between. I honestly CANNOT get bored of your show. From the breathtaking scenery, to the emersion of foreign culture, and from the "spoken from the heart" poetic dialog, to the intense food orgasms. Thank you Tony; for a great show, and inspiration to always grow as a person. Thank you.

Congratulations on the much-deserved Emmy! Watching the Sardina show, & thoroughly enjoying it. I plan to spend a couple of months in Italy next year, & Sardinia looks well worth altering some of my plans to visit. Of course, you're lucky enough to be there w/ the charming Ottavia & her wonderful family as your guides, but even sans that, thanks to your show, I feel it's a place I would love. BTW, my favorite exchange btween you & your wife so far: Tony-"So, she's going to play w/ the bunny while we eat it's relatives..." Octtavia (w/ a matter-of-fact wave of the hand)- "Yes. But that's all right."
Such is the way of nature.

Tony; I throughly enjoy No Reservations but last night's episode Sardinia, was especially heart-warming. Your personal story made it all the more real, always connecting the human side with the culture and the foods and beautifully captured by your Emmy award winning cinematographers. Your show is witty, funny and well written. Keep up the good work.

  41. 41
    Lauren - September 15 2009 @ 10:08 am

For a long, long time, Romania was my favorite episode.. simply for the pure absurdity, and how close to truth it was, showing how even the most well-planned travels can go to hell in a handbasket in mere seconds.. and you just gotta roll with it. (I also appreciated the Beirut cluster-fuck episode, but for different reasons.)

That all changed last night when I saw the Sardinia episode. What a beautiful tribute to a place that has become a second home to you by the fortuitous origins of your wife. Although one of my favorite things about watching your show is your bitter cynicism juxtaposed by your surprise at all the good things you encounter in your travels, I always suspected you had a soft side! I just want to thank you for letting that show through in Sardinia.

Aside from the sentimental family crap, though, the food-porn, I must say, was exquisite. It may be my penchant for rustic homemade Italian cuisine, but I actually found myself leaning forwards off my couch, wanting to reach out and grab that spaghetti alla fish-stuff (I wish I remembered what exactly that fish-product was called that was all over the pasta). Seeing that loving hand-made preparation just transported me back to my semester in Rome where our meals were prepared by the benevolent culinary dictator Maria and her evil cronies (evil only for the addictive crack they put in their carbonara, from which I'm still trying to lose the weight on my hips). So you were not the only one waxing nostalgic from your trip to Sardenga.

Thanks again for such an enjoyable show. Tell your wife that her television filming fears are unwarranted. She's beautiful and quite funny (she could do more TV if she wanted!). And while I know you're trying to shelter your adorable daughter from the limelight (y'all did a pretty good job of keeping her face from the camera), I think it'd be a great idea to take her to the Congo... you never know what kind of trouble that angelic face could get you out of! (kidding, kidding..)

    Tony-
What a transition is occurring, and you are doing it so gracefully and for all to witness. Maybe Vic is gone along with the Cigs and tokehead days, but it all seems and feels so genuine. May my own transition into 'what's next' be done so well, and maybe there's an Ottavia out there waiting for me and I'll climb back on the commitment pony again some day.
Congrats to the ZPZ team on the Emmy. Remember to keep the show always real-deal, as you did last night with your family, in-laws and whatever out-law friends you still keep close.

OK, now that the mystery guest from the Tuscany episode has been revealed as Mrs. Bourdain, shouldn't you come clean about the Jamie Oliver carbonara & meatballs setup? Or will you also blame that on the demented Italian director?

  45. 45
    Kate from Maine - September 15 2009 @ 1:25 pm

Another congratulations to everyone for the well-deserved Emmy. Your show is one of the most beautifully filmed in the history of television, and would be worth watching for that alone. That you are a genuinely interesting human being who speaks well is a nice bonus.

I wish I'd been able to see last night's episode; one of the hazards of dorm living is that the lounge TV is no always available. I live in Maine, and last night there was a Patriot's game, so I hid in my room and played truly awful video games instead. (Only certain channels are available in the rooms, and of course the few channels I regularly watch aren't any of them.)

I look forward to catching the re-run of this episode. Hearing you snark and watching you turn a bad situation into riveting television (and occasionally into pure comedy gold) is always interesting, but it's when you get thoughtful that the show really hits the hardest. Also, there's the aspect of watching a brilliant curmudgeon just kicking back and enjoying himself with friends and family, not needing to prove anything to anybody, just having a good time. It's reassuring; everybody needs times like these.

My only complaint has nothing to do with the show- Captcha keeps eating my posts!

Mr. Bourdaine, Congrats on your emmy, well deserved. Of all the episodes I've seen, and I've been watching from the shows inception, the latest with you and your wife visiting her home country of Sardinia is by far my favorite. Let me just say as I watched my mouth was literally watering with a desire to eat that countries truely amazing cuisine. I am a Pastor know, formerly a pastry chef, and lover of ethnic cuisine. I couldn't help but think as I was eating my Falafel this afternoon from a local Lebonese joint, how much I would have enjoyed your company. If you ever get to Scranton, PA please whatever you do, do not eat the pizza.

I'd like to add my congratulations to Zero Point Zero on a richly deserved Emmy win. The photography on some of the shows has been absolutely breathtaking -- Laos and Venice come immediately to mind, but last night's show was beautiful as well. And speaking of beautiful, Ottavia was feisty and funny; Ariane (what we could see of her) is adorable; it's great to see you so happy, and Sadinia looks like a truly beautiful place.

Ottavia, you looked great, and your presence answered many questions over the past few years about "Tony Bourdain's wife" - now everyone got to see the same down-to-earth, fiesty, funny lady I met a few Christmases ago, so now y'all know for yourself, Bourdain fans - this is Ottavia! Brava, and Ariane was adorable. And it was a wonderful episode of NR in its own right - the goat had me drooling!

PS: For Ottavia watchers, she was also in the Tuscany episode and in the background shots of the Hawai'i episode, when Todd catches fire - although this time, she did not have to do anything but just be Ottavia. ("You want to talk about this NOW?!")

Congratulations on the Videography Emmy, guys! Your camera people totally deserve it - for all the mocking Todd takes for his "clumsiness", he and Zach do a LOT of brilliant work.

One brief niggle about something you said on the Sardinia show - Since when does Jamie Oliver "drag his family all over the television", anyway? If anything based on what I've seen of his cooking programs (at least those shown in the US), he's more like you - living the on-camera bachelor's life, and only occasionally mentioning he's married and has kids.

My wife was of the opinion his wife, Jules, so desperately hated being a "character" on THE NAKED CHEF that she told him she'd rather the world thought he was still single than she had to appear on-camera with him again!

    Hey, Tony:

I spent a chunk of my evening last night watching the Sardinia--Meet the Inlaws episode. I thoroughly enjoyed it on many levels. I especially enjoyed the level of pure joy so evident on your face. I never thought I's use this word in connection with you, but the place and everyone, including your wife, was--lovely.

I'm thrilled, but not ecstatic, about the Emmys. I'd be ecstatic it NR had received the three it deserved. A well-deserved congratulations to everyone.

By the way, next time you're in Oakland, on International Boulevard, be sure to add to your itinerary the "It's All Good" bakery close to Children's Hospital. It's the original headquarters of the Black Panther Party and stopping place for a myriad of celebrities. The pastry is simple, down home--the best sweet potato or custard pie and unbelievable yellow cake with chocolate icing.

    Carry on!

    Tony,

Enjoyed the Sardinia episode very much.

Please thank your wife for being the familial tour guide. She was charming and your daughter was pretty cute. The part about the bunny was endearing to me.

I loved seeing the food, so different from anything I'd ever eaten. Maybe there is a guidebook on Sardinia you could recommend to us. If not, there's always the web.

Congratulations on the Emmy. It's great to see your crew get the recognition they deserve.

Good luck with the new season!

Congratulations on your Emmy! Don't worry about turning into Jamie Oliver, and tell your wife to get over the bag of snakes! Put your wife on more of your shows!!! She's bright and articulate in her comments, a good foil to your snark factor (she's got her own delightful edge!) and I enjoyed, after five seasons of you (no offense) seeing a woman on the show take the front seat! You say she's a big critique of your show?--great! Because your show is just getting better and better! It's the only thing on the tube I consistently watch! Remember--more, not less, wife factor! Congratulations again to your hard working crew! Well deserved!

Just adding my congrats on the Emmy. I have been watching all the seasons since the beginning and do absolutely notice the quality rise with each. Some episodes I just watch again and again because of the beautiful way they have captured a place. Good Job.
I also enjoyed the Sardinia episode and seeing you with your wife, child and family. Nice, although my son had to console me since you are my vision when I ever think of a fun and sexy mate. Ha! Good luck and thanks for sharing your beautiful family with us a little.

Way to go on that Emmy, everyone! I also want to congratulate Ottavia-- I was stunned when I read Tony's blog entry about her reluctance to be on camera! She seemed completely at ease, so if that was an act, she ought to bring home a best actress Emmy!

Congrats on the Emmy, and now I must put Sardinia on my to-go-to list. I think that now, Tony, you understand that Italian Family" thing, and why I loved my Nonnas' cooking.

Congrats to you and the No Reservations team for the well-deserved award. As a faithful viewer and admirer of your show (easily one of the best on TV across the board), this past episode was a departure for sure, but a welcome one that allowed us fans a "peak behind the curtain" of your private life. Your wife is every bit of the feisty, intelligent and strong woman that I think any fan of yours always imagined as the only type that could tolerate being with you (that's a compliment). Kudos on the beautiful family, and continued success...

Because your wife was on the Sardinia show, I actually got my wife to watch it. She acted like she wasn't, but she was. I've suckered her in a few times before, mainly for an Irish episode and when you were here in the Bay Area, (none of us knew we could get baconfat lattes here). I don't think she will change her mind that you're a smartass that has her husband's dream job, but at least she may think that your not off with hookers and piles of blow between scenes. Thanks Tony. And SLAINTE to the crew on the Emmy.

I thought this might have been the last episode. As you are going to the Caribbean next season, allow me to recommend Tortola, and specifically two points of interest: Mrs. Scatcliffe's, run by the person for whom it is named, a family enterprise of local fare run out of their home, and served up with a dose of family entertainment at the end. The curried goat is to die for. And, once you are done with that, head over to Bomba's Shack on the beach, but be sure to go at the full moon when they serve their tea made with magic mushrooms. Ahem. You might meet a former CIA agent and his hot blonde wife there. Best of luck for next season.

As long as the eating's good, I don't give a damn about the edge. But while we're talking about the edge, last I heard it's a good thing to be multifaceted, and I'm going to assume you're not just a one-dimensional edgy guy. So forget about those people who want the 'old' Tony--just be yourself and keep ferreting out amazing, authentic food.

Congrats to you and your crew on the nominations, and the Emmy for cinematography. I'm a longtime fan of your show and reader of your books, and I look forward to seeing Cuba through your eyes. As a second generation American of Cuban descent who currently has a cousin (who happens to be a doctor) but is dieing of untreated cancer because there are no medications or even food in the hospitals, I know that your trips of the beaten (ne tourist) trap will lead you to the true people and their literal hunger for food. Don't forget to bring toilet paper.

..."The two of them spent the rest of the evening basking happily in the admiring praise of other directors of photography, camera operators and cinematographers..."

And well they should have. I've watched NR since its beginning, and the cinematography has become quite stunning. While I still hold up NatGeo as the Mecas for photgraphy, NR (of all places!) is my favorite for stupendous filming. It's incredible that this quality of work is done by two guys and I can't imagine the effort that goes on behind the scenes to make it happen. They've really got a body of work that others will have to attempt to beat, or work hard to even equal. Well done.

Congratulations on the Emmy! Nobody deserves it more than those two! And regarding the Sardina Episode: We happened to have a last bottle of Cannoneau De Sardegna we opened for the occasion. We were actually in the middle of eating the boeuf a la ficelle from your cookbook when we got to the bit with baby goat basted in herbed pork fat. Both jaws and forks dropped simultaneously. Hooray for TiVo, so we could rewind and watch that bit again... and again.

Was your wife in the Tuscany episode, as one of the critical Italians who hated your initial efforts? I swear she looks like the woman in the sunglasses.

The episode was wonderful, now I want to go to Sardinia. I love the eclectic. I was also glad to meet your most incredible wife. A woman I could emulate. :) Congrats on your Emmy.

Looking forward to more Monday nights with No Reservations—you make food look so sexy on the show. I can’t wait to start cooking; it has inspired me to be “Sardinian” in the kitchen. I live in Erie the first place I ever lived where I do not enjoy dining out for lack of any ingenuity and freshness in the kitchen. I truly enjoyed Kitchen Confidential as well. Thanks for your honesty—keep up the writing, it rocks!

    To Anthony and the crew,

Much congrats on your well-deserved win. I love to travel, as do most of us, and to see your work as you portray the foreign, exotic and sometimes local destinations is absolutely gorgeous. I have become addicted to the show as well as to all the books that you have written Anthony. Your work just takes me out of my (forsaken) town and love to live life. I was once at work in a kitchen. 7+ years from a dishwasher to a manager. Then I got fired for being falsely accused. Its how I relate to you and to see your show brings me inspiration to travel to every island, cave, city and everything in between. Kudos on everything and godspeed on your future travels.

    Dear Tony,
I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I wanted to at least try to thank you because you have changed my life. I'm not terminally ill or anything. Actually, I'm just a nice Jewish girl from suburban Philly, and my mother is an amazing cook. The local butcher says she makes the best brisket he's ever sliced. Thing is, I decided to become a vegetarian when I was 12, (I was even vegan for a while) and I have eaten very little meat since then. My decision to abstain from meat was probably fueled at first by wanting to mimic my summer camp counselors and then later by a combination of environmentalism and habit. I have always had an interest in cooking and fine food, but the field has its obvious limits for a vegetarian, which never really bothered me. Once, I even went to Buenos Aires and ate nothing but ravioli for 10 days without even once considering eating meat. It just no longer appealed to me. Until I started watching your show. Literally no other show, movie, book, or person, in 10 years, has ever made me think twice about my decision. Anyway, I'm 22 now, and suddenly I feel like I've been missing out on some of the best food the earth has to offer. So tonight, on the eve of the Jewish new year, for the first time in 10 years, I ate my mother's delicious brisket. And now there's no turning back. I can't wait to get home to Brooklyn and try all your New York recommendations- especially because I want my first taste of pork in a decade to have your seal of approval. I don't know if it's your writing, your sense of humor, or your politics, but something about you was more influential for me than any other chef or food critic. So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart/stomach, for the gift that keeps on giving. Also- ridiculing Andrew Zimmern never gets any less funny, so please keep up the good work on that front.
    Cheers!

I enjoyed your NYC episode filmed in Manhattan. I got a chuckle when you and the old timer were complaining about no more dive bars. The problem is that most of Manhattan are not "True NYC People". Most come from somewhere else unlike the 4 outer boros. Come up to the Bronx or Queens,Brookyn or Staten"Italy" and you will find old time true city bars. Also when I say Brooklyn I don't mean Brooklyn height or Park Slope. I mean Bay Ridge or older part of Carrol Gardens. Congrats on the Emmy.

Congrats on the Emmy. It is very well deserved.
And, although I realize I am unable to speak for other fans, I very much enjoyed your family show. I also enjoy the snarky shows. You can never go wrong in my book going to great destinations, eating great food, and being brutally honest and a funny smart-ass about it at the same time. TRAVEL ON, TONY!!

Well deserved Emmy. Props to the entire staff!

Have you filmed your Cuba show yet? I would like to see Santiago de Cuba, as I think it's a far more charming city than Havana with its Colonial architecture and history. Another place I would like to see included in your itinerary is the coastal village of Gibara (where Columbus first landed). It was the birthplace of my father.

Holy crap! Just when you thought it might be the end in pops another comment. Well maybe your bored out there on the road and need some cheap entertainment so you'll read this. Good job Tony its nice to see someone that travels like me because for me it was always the people and the food but you get paid to do it, what a gig.

First off, congrats to the crew, they have finally received some notoriety besides ruining a days worth of nourishment, or a platter of indian midnight joy.

Tony, I very much resent you. But not as much as Zimmern. My blinding pride prevents me from saying the truth, that I envy you. I don't resent you, I very much enjoy your show and your writing,in fact I'd rather listen to your wit and satire, the respect and admiration you generously pour onto the last minutes of every episode for the destination you last drank to. You see Tony, I very well could be typing this to nobody other than the several other commentators, however if you do read this, I think you should be reminded that there are people who watch the show for more than the random insults fired at random celebrities, for more than the drinking and cursing, but for you, Tony. It's refreshing in a time of facades and mouths sewn shut, with nervous eyes averted. The honesty. Whether it be cruel honesty, or pure loving honesty, the honesty is as fresh as that street food your so blessed to enjoy and digest. And as I write this, I know I'll hear a conclusion to your show and be reminded how much better of a writer you are. Oh Tony, how I resent you.

I have a question about Sardinia. What towns did you visit and can you provide the names of the restaurants/agritourismos you frequented. My wife and I are going in January (yes, I said, January.)
One more thing. If you ever come to Cleveland again, I'll treat you to the best pastrami sandwich you've ever had. Katz's Deli? Forget about it! One more thing. My wife and I are probably the only two people you've emailed with that have been to Archachon. Sanford Herskovitz, aka Mister Brisket

Anthony, I just wanted to express the deep gratitude that I have for you and your show. I have learned so much from you..and are uniquely original in thought and presence. YOU ARE A TRUE SOUL...what I admire is that you love this world, the good and the bad...and your love for all cultures is truly impacting. Today I saw the episode of where you went to Mexico with your old buddy who is now the head chef at "Les Hailles" in New York.It was such a personal piece to do with him, showing how he came from Mexico, why he came also..the ending made me cry..it was very poignant and extremely touching to show him as an incredible being...I am a very proud Latina, Mexican,Spanich and French desent..I understand how hard it is to be a proud Latin in this country (The US)..they like our food ...but many times they do not and still will no give us the respect I and many others deserve. I truly thank you for all that you do to enlighten us all. May God bless you and all those around you always. I hope to meet you one day!.... Karen A Lopez, Upland, CA.

Recently, I watched your Azores episode and noticed you were missing one thing: The Madeira Feast of the Blessed Sacrament. If you know about this festival then you know what I'm talking about, but if you don't.. then your in for 20 barrels(yes i said barrels) of Madeiran wine which is consumed over a four day period. Keep in mind, this is not to mention all the beer and mixed drinks and Portuguese/ Azorean cuisine that is consumed over a weekend in August located in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Supposedly this is one of the largest consumptions of alcohol for a festival in the world. Let us know if your interested!

    Dear Tony and crew...

Congrats on the Emmy, now that you have been anointed into the mainstream you can give up any pretenses as a guerilla operation and get down to selling out completely!

Seriously, I love your show even though I never watched it until this year. I am voraciously watching every rerun I can catch on cable. (Which is a lot.)

Loved the show in Sardinia. The family angle didn't detract from your bad-ass reputation, so don't worry.

Keep it up for us not fortunate enough to be able to span the globe like some mutant Wide World of Sports correspondent run amok.

Oh yes, I have been meaning to mention that in a couple of recent shows you have lamented that it is “to late for you”. As if being over 50 is akin to residing in a coffin. Please stop this. For those of us older than you it is very depressing.

    Regards: Robert

I saw your NY Times interview this past Saturday, and have finally come down from 'cloud 9'. I would've asked you the following questions that evening, had I had (a) the nerve and (b) time. Hope you read/answer them when you have a chance
    1. How do you stay so slim and fit despite how much you eat/drink?
    2. Do you take your wife and daughter with you when you travel?
    3. Will you ever do another show where you invite viewers to suggest new places for you to travel to?
    4. Would you consider coming to Long Island to eat dinner at my house?
