Swag Bags For All My Friends!

By Anthony Bourdain on July 18, 2009 10:11 PM | Permalink | 105 Comments

I can't tell you how happy and proud I am that NO RESERVATIONS just got nominated for three Prime Time Emmy Awards. But I am particularly exuberant that the camera work and editing have been individually honored.

True, the show was also nominated for Best Non-Fiction program, a category which brings glory, presumably, to all of us who work at Zero Point Zero Productions.

Chris Collins and Lydia Tenaglia, my friends and partners and fellow creators of this whole enterprise most of all. But they're always getting nominated for stuff -- and winning too: For that other excellent show they make: Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie.

It's  veteran shooters Zach Zamboni and Todd Liebler I thought instantly about. And our poor, tormented editor, Jesse Fisher, usually isolated from society behind an always-closed door, hunched in front of his blinking screen ... I thought of them, imagined them loaded with swag bags, careening drunkenly down the red carpet, Todd inadvertently crushing Ryan Seacrest's tiny foot beneath his heroic hoof, blundering magnificently towards destiny and his gold statuette. Jesse, ordering up Mai Tai's, cases of grapefruit and Gerber Mini-Magnums from the pool at the Chateau Marmont (and charging them to Lindsey Lohan's room).

At various low moments on the road: one camera down, weather turned suddenly to shit, sidekick slumped over into incoherent heap, power failure, threatened military coup, diarrhea, cloud of mosquitos, war (the sort of travellers annoyances that pop up from time to time), it has become a recurring practice of mine to cheer on the crew with the well-worn comment, "I ...smell...EMMY!"

As often as I meant it in a facetious, sarcastic, embittered, "What-the-hell-are-we-doing-here--this scene is a wash" kind of a way, I did mean it for real. Because the truth is, the level of camera work and editing on this show has been getting steadily better every year. The shooters have been busting their asses -- pushing themselves -- often under truly ridiculous conditions -- to get better and better looking shots, to frame and compose and capture them in exciting new ways.

This has involved the development of some really extraordinary (often jury rigged, homemade) equipment and rigging and a lot more time, effort and sheer physical endurance to make optimal use of it all. Zach and Todd have been all over the world with me, hanging out of helicopters, strapped to the roofs of cars, riding backwards on horses, bombing downhill on skateboards while holding cameras, and humping an ever heavier load of improvised steadi-cams, gyros, monitors, and long, mutant lenses around in sub-tropical heat, hip deep mud and driving rain. I've come to learn that if they ask me to "do it again -- slowly," (walk down a street, up a hill, down the stairs, over a cliff), I may hate to hear it, but if a guy carrying about 35 pounds more than me insists he wants to do it again (and backwards in his case), then, it's probably for a pretty good reason. I'm guessing he sees something pretty goddamned through that lens.

It's a very good feeling seeing a happy cameraman on this show. They get this look from behind the lens and I can see that they're picturing how what's happening now is going to look after 9 weeks of editing and post-production and how they can possibly make that eventual outcome even better ... It's nice to stand on a bamboo bridge, early in the morning in Luang Prabang, mist rising off the river and just know that this is going to be great.

As a story teller it's a joy to know that all these talented and creative people are around me to help find new and exciting and ever changing ways to tell those stories.

All the veteran editors on the show; Jesse Fisher, Eric Lasby, Chris Martinez and Dave Robinson are an inestimably important component of the finished show ... All the great photography in the world, the best story, all that would be useless without the people back in those dark cubicles in New York -- all of whom have their own signature styles and strengths-- who put it all together in compelling and thrillingly manipulative ways. In the end, it's the editing that tells us how to feel about what we see. Its powers are extraordinary -- the seemingly simple process of putting one shot after another. And choosing and laying in the music. Those juxtapositions absolutely rule the finished work.

For me, to be able to stand on that bridge in Laos, aware that Zach's shooting from one angle--and Todd wandering around on the far bank getting B-roll -- and knowing how good they are at what they do, to imagine what they might be getting on tape, to know who's likely to be editing the finished footage is an inspiration. It alternately allows me to tell stories I might never have been able to tell -- or (alternately) saves my ass when I can't even see a story in what we're doing.

I've worked so long with these guys, that I find myself sometimes, writing sentences in my head, just by looking at where they're pointing their lenses. I'm guessing -- I hope -- I'm pretty damn sure that these nominations mean a lot to the people who work so hard to make this show. You might swing over to the section on this site called Meet The Crew to see what these people look like. Someone missing from that rogues gallery is Paul Cabana, who produced the Laos episode -- and who graciously appeared in any number of episodes as "Asian Number #7." A while back the bastard went off to work in the real world. We missed him then. Now we have even more reason to miss him.

Whether we actually win anything or not? I have no clue. But I'm pretty sure we get some cool swag bags. And I'm hoping the network will pay for mini-bar.

Yes, well deserved all around. Was it my imagination, though, and was that a "Hosted and written by" credit under Tony's name at the end of the Chile episode. Have never seen a writing credit before.

Congratulations to You and your Crew! You do wonderful work with your show. We thoroughly enjoy it here in my home - the entire family (all 3 generations) sit and watch it together sometimes. You all deserve this pinnacle of broadcast recognition. May you take home every last Golden Statue.... And TONS of free Swag!

Well done for the nominations. Also well done for mentioning your crew. Far too many shows don't mention about what goes on behind the scenes.

I've seen you show the camera men a few times. And, I don't know about anyone else, but I like to see their camera shy reactions. Makes good TV!

The Emmy noms are great news. Congratulations! Speaking as a former video editor, I can tell you it is a rare treat to have your contributions truly recognized by the host/talent. You editors' dedication to the program shows in the 'little' things that editors do only when they're working for good people and under good conditions... I see such subtle touches in every episode of NR. Congrats again and Gabba Gabba Hey!

Aw, man. When I read the post title, I thought you meant swag for *us*, all your little groupies.

Seriously, though, congratulations to you and the crew. Todd, especially, deserves some validation that his various mishaps have been in the name of a greater good.

The professional recognition is great, and you guys earned it. You should win. But that hardly matters. Making a show that started good and keeps getting better, that matters. Making a show that at its best (which is frequent) transcends mere food and travel and shows us our humanity--bastards sometimes, inconceivably resilient often, but gracious and friendly always--that matters. Thank you.

Your commending your partners, staff, etc., shows us what a wonderful man you really are. Even when you weary of the work, please know that we are all out here awaiting the next show and can only hope that you go on for many, many years. Kisses to all the group.

Tony's embedded commercial for bing.com was a big surprise and disappointment.
    - I've been a fan for years. Feel he's established trust with me and that sales stuff/pitches will be clearly separate from his commentary/persona
    - Now, I'm feeling that when I see him, even in a 'natural' setting, I have to be on guard against a sales pitch!
    - Once I lose that trust, it's very hard, if not impossible, to get back.

Didn't you 'smart' folks and the agency think about the downside of this dumb approach?

    Reservations About "No Reservations"!

Oh Mi Gosh! I'm stammering like a school-girl because I just left a comment on the blog (see #23) of a foodie that should be adored- Anthony Bourdain! But, of course- I addressed him as "Tony". I had to. My desire was prompted by the show's Emmy nomination. Well deserved! What an amazing person, or should I say what amazing attitude wrapped up into a shell of a person. Of course, we all know he's the real deal. Cynically weathered (in a crusty-good way), insanely intelligent; and the whole time, sarcasm- his middle name... and that's on a good day. Kudos to his team and crew! Check out Bourdain's blog link (as well as many others) on "Totally Boss Blogs" found on the side bar. I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!

Congratulations to you and the crew! The show is great and has gotten better with each season. Great episode tonight, I loved that you really stayed away from the whole Australian tourist thing and really showed your audience an entirely different Australia from the one we probably think of. Your narrative, the camera shots, music, and editing all combine for a perfect hour of escape to places I've never visited. Also as a side note I wanted to address the comment above that criticized Tony for doing the Bing.com ad and calling Tony a sell-out and a big disappointment. Um, whoever wrote that comment is talking out their ass. Tony has a kid and a wife, so maybe he's thinking of them when he did that commercial, or maybe he did it and it really shouldn't concern people why because after all it's just a fucking commercial. It's not like he sold his soul to 'that other network' or anything. Anyways, just wanted to say great show as always and congrats on the well deserved emmy nomination. I really hope you guys win!

yes, without a doubt a well-deserved nomination and praise for the show's crew. a lot of love and fan adoration is thrown your way show after show, mr. bourdain, but i think a lot of credit has to be given to your behind-the-scenes team. the emotional impact -- the 'coolness' of this great series -- is really brought on by the excellent camera angles/movement, timing, music, etc. keep up the good work!

I watched Chile show twice, back to back. Not just cuz it's gorgeous over there, also because I was amazed at editing and shots. Beautiful work. Well-deserved noms. Bourdain cracks me up. Best writer. The part in Kitchen Confidential about the steakhouse interview still makes me chuckle -- "what do you know about me?". I tell about it at social gatherings, laughing so hard, I can't fully spit it out. I'm sure peope think I'm a weirdo and need a life, but once in awhile someone gets it, so it's worth it to get a hood laugh. Back from 3 months on French Polynesia so catching a rerun of that show bought a tear to my eye. I love that place. Bourdain has probably done more dot tourism than anyone. I am going to start telling people my dream job is to work on your crew. Thanks for opening the world in such an enjoyable way!!

    Congrats to all!
One of the reasons I love the show is the increasing sophistication and excellence in the visuals and writing. I'm amazed at how much I can learn about a place (its people, history, culture, geography, and of course food) in one story/episode.

Saint- Exupery said "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." I think Bourdain and crew do a masterful job at putting things together and then taking away any flotsam and jetsam until what's left is pretty damn near perfect. I never knew I could learn so much through a country's cuisine, whether its deep fried twinkies or foie gras.

Many congratulations on the Emmy nominations, Bourdain and Co. You deserve to win 'em all.
Regarding Australia last night--I loved it, and I'd say to Elmo (#42 above) that one of the main POINTS of the episode had to do with immigrants and immigrant cuisine, so of course Chinese...and Sichuan. Didn't we also "taste" kebabs and brat's? Aussie cuisine is international! That said, I must confess I really envied what your dining experience at Rumi, at the Sichaun place, and at "Mail ???" out in the middle of nowhere. I've spent half of today trying to figure out how to get from San Diego (my home) to Melbourne without long-haul air flights! Thanks, Monsieur Bourdain.

I watched the Aussie show and then watched the missing scenes at the Vietnam Rest. They were wonderful. I know that I will never get to go out into the world again, but I spent an hour there on tv watching you so enjoy yourself and I laughed and cried. I live now in the middle of the country, so interesting food is what I miss most. After much searching, I have found a Pho shop where the soup has a good original taste. That is all they do in this shop and I go out of my way to get there once a week. It is much easier on the East coast to find good food, but I plug along. Because of its content, I found the Aussie show the best this new season. You do communicate with a flair. The best travel/food show ever.

The camera work in this show is outstanding, its no surprise it was nominated. And Tony, you arent so shabby yourself. Congrats on the nominations, good luck, and keep bringing us new adventures. Love ya!

Congratulations on the Emmy Noms. Very well deserved because the show is not just about eating weird stuff. It's about getting into a variety of cultures throught eyes, and stomachs, of the natives. I've been watching for some time now, even before you were on the travel channel, and have yet to see a show filmed in Israel. Any reason you've visited virtually all the neighboring countries but not Israel? It is loaded with great food, culture and interesting people.

Well deserved Tony! Every night I can't wait to turn on my idiot box and open the No Reservations folder on my Tivo. It's always a wonderfully intriguing and entertaining experience to journey with you to cities both foreign and domestic and see things I never would see on a sales trip or visiting family. You show us the diamonds in the rough and not just the glitzy tourist attractions and that's why I love your show. I want to go to places I was never interested in before because of your jaunts into the foodie wilderness. Thank you and congrats on the nominations.

PS: When are you gonna come to Atlanta!?!?! even your new sponsor bing.com knows we something to offer.

Tony, this is the most intelligent, magnificent show ever. It keeps improving, each episode has a character all its own. You never follow a "template" and always offer something different. That is greatness. Gosh, are you ever afraid you'll run out of locations? (haha)

Congrats on the nominations - just watched the London and Edinburgh episode, fantastic stuff - almost made me homesick for the UK. All I need to get hold of now is a copy of Mrs Beeton's and I'm in business re-creating the food my mother fed us as kids. Number 1 on that list is mincemeat for Christmas, and yes it includes beef - my mother still makes it properly and it beats commercial syruped fruit any day of the week!!

Congratulations to you Tony and to the great crew. Very impressed by the way you recognize the others that make the show so great.
I love to cook, and am absolutely hooked on your show........but, I imagine even non-cooks love to watch the show just to see the travelogue as well as to listen to and see the wonderful "snarky bad boy" getting into all kinds of interesting situations

I am totally hooked on your show. Having been in the cooking world for many years (now just in our own kitchen) I love seeing foods from countries I haven't been to yet. And you totally crack me up! If you ever want to do Prague, let us know. My husband is Czech and we go back to Prague every year for 2-3 weeks. We would be honored to be your private tour guides.

Congrats Tony and Crew! You are the only show on TV, that I must say isn't mindless crap. Your show helps inspire people to not only see the world - but taste it. Something that many people are overlooking! Come back to Chicago - there's alot more here!

About nine years ago, I was a U.S. expat living in The Hague when I ordered a few books from Amazon. The name Anthony Bourdain seemed only vaguely familiar, but the book's premise piqued my curiosity. One Saturday morning, I cracked open the volume and spent the weekend on the sofa howling with laughter - to the consternation of my family, who thought I'd gone 'round the bend. In fact, I'd fallen hopelessly in love with the intelligence, insights, irreverence and wit of Tony Bourdain. "No Reservations" serves to elevate my opinion of the man, whose status in these starry eyes is approaching God-like proportions. How fortunate for us both that I'm sufficiently mature not to entertain groupie-stalker notions - but, I can dream, can't I? ;-)

    Congrats to all! Well deserved!

    Natalija - July 23 2009 @ 8:02 pm

You should come to Lithuania. I'd even show you around, and see if you can handle the three day old pork left on the counter. But there's nothing like a bowl of Šaltibarščiai (cold beet soup) in the summer, or juka (blood soup, koldunai (dumplings), or even Šaltnosiukai (cold little noses) (lingonberry dumplings), just to hit the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks for your great show. My sister and I thoroughly enjoy every episode. I would like to tell you what a feat it is to beat out fairies, princesses, cartoons and everthing else a 8 year old girl who's color is pink holds dear. My sister deems your show to be the best show on tv, and ranks you as her favorite person after her family, friends and other acquaintances! LOL! She's often suggested to tv shows that are less entertaining that you should guest star. Happy travles!

However, you guys need to make a stop in St. Louis. There's great food, and of course all the Anheuser-Busch products a man could want. Congrats again on the Emmy nods

I am a History teacher at a lower income school in the Bronx and after browsing through the travel channel I caught an episode of No Reservations and got hooked. Due to its cultural diversity, historically accurate information and the great cuisines alongside great sceneries this show can easily be a history/anthropology/psychology/sociology documentary except it isn’t boring and Anthony does not have an English accent. I have given my students homework which includes watching this show and writing an essay on its content and in my opinion the awards are well deserved congratulations and thank you for sharing your enlightened work with the world. In the words of Anthony from his New Orleans episode to Anthony how does it feel to be part of changing the world for the better?

"In the end, it's the editing that tells us how to feel about what we see."

I am very impressed by these ackowledgements and appreciation of the crew! I am a fan of the show -a childhood friend of your camera man, Todd- AND a Union Scenic Artist working on T.V. shows and movies...It is wonderful that you publically credit your crew - I know they (we in the industry) work very hard and you do too! I really love the show and your support of The Ramones!!! Jess

Congratulations Tony and crew! No one deserves it more. As a photography director and producer myself, I watch the show with a slightly different eye than many viewers. I am amazed at the complexity of the production and I'm always just a bit jealous that I'm not working with you and your crew. You all deserve to be commended for your vision and dedication and Tony...it's fantastic that you understand and acknowledge your crew's hard work. Best of luck on the Emmy!

Are you surprised? Dude No Reservations is just about the best show to date that i've ever seen. Sincere, educational, and inspirational, it really doesn't get any better. This show deserves every award there is, Period. The best of everything, and thanks to this show i've learned things and expanded my mind to other cultures. Not to be a kissa$$ but seriously what show or anything can compete? Long live Tony.

Tony hands down deserves every award there is to give. This show is terrific, while being sincere, educational and inspirational. Can anyone suggest a better show? The two people i look up to most are Steve Irwin (past away 2006) and Tony Bourdain. Before i die it would be an honor to shake his hand. Long live Tony

I love your show Tony! The episode in Sri Lanka really opened up a whole cultural roots connections journey for me! The methodology and food culture of Sri Lanka is very simliar to Southern Burmese coastal cooking.

On that point, how about something even more controversial and unchartered? A No Reservations episode in the elusive fascist Disneyland known as Myanmmar, formerly Burma?

You guys deserve it. Tony is the reason im going to school to become a chef even though I will never consider myself a chef. All of your books and shows are insparational and eye opening. Everyone always asks me what chef I would want to meet listing off Bobby Flay or another food network person. The only chef I would be pumped about meeting would be Anthony Bourdain he would be the only one that would sit down with me have a beer and talk about the stupid *** that happens in restaurants.

Congrats to Tony & crew on the persistent and rising quality of the show. Since no one else here has remarked upon it, I'd like to give some recognition to whoever does the artwork for the beween-ads moments: the silhouetted crows for the Sri Lanka episode added to the atmosphere - just a well-executed nice touch.

Maybe it is just me but the show "MAN vs. Food" is the most stupid show I have ever seen. I am a fan of No Reservations and Bizzare Foods, MAN vs. Food is just suck. I did not want to watch the stupid show, I want to watch No Reservations and Bizzare Foods.

Congrats! I just discovered your show as some of the episodes are offered on Netflix as part of their "watch now" streaming selections. Totally hilarious - love the smart ass approach. You must either work out a lot or be blessed with an amazing metabolism! Lookin' good! I really loved the episodes on Mexico and Uruguay. I visited Uruguay as part of a South American cruise in 2008 and really liked it. Not much not to like about Punte del Este, right? Anyway, yours is my new favorite show. Rock on!!
